PREMIERE: DAVID BANNER OPENS ‘THE GOD BOX’ FOR STREAMING

It’s been seven years since his last album, but David Banner has finally returned to form with a brand new full-length, The God Box. Across 15 tracks, half of which were self-produced (he is Rhythm Roulette alum, after all), the Mississippi rapper is direct as ever. Jumping out the gate, he immediately gets into the subject of lynching and fighting for freedom with dense rhymes over some classic beats on “Magnolia.” Driving home his priority of making music with purpose, his second verse is more spoken word poetry than rap.

The album continues building on those themes but expands stylistically by drawing on the wealth of creativity in Southern musical styles over the years. On the “A Milli” inspired “Elvis,” Banner goes in hard on cultural appropriation; with “Amy” he questions the use of the word n***a and shits on high-end designer brands; and “Black Fist” gets unabashedly revolutionary.

While there are a few synths and programmed drums, live instrumentation is prominent throughout, including copious guitar work. “Judy Blare” is actually a straight up hard rock song. Features include like-minded and fellow-Mississippian Big K.R.I.T, the always topical Black Thought, a surprising appearance by Trinidad James and many more.

The God Box drops at midnight tonight, but we’ve got the exclusive stream for our MASS APPEAL peoples above. Get woke.
